Indian Bands That Should Be On Your Playlist

When people hear the words “Indian music,” they associate it with either Bollywood or classical Indian music. They are unaware of the fact that there are a lot more flavours in Indian music other than Bollywood and Classical music. There is much more to the music industry, and we can thank Indie music artists for the fresh sounds and innovative musical creations. 

Let’s go meet the creative Indians:

The F16s

This Chennai based electro-rocker band was formed in 2012. They are a group of 5 members: Josh, on Vocals and Guitar; Abhinav, on Guitar, Shashank on Bass, Harshan on the Keyboard, and Manu on drums/Percussion.

They describe themselves as ‘a pop band altered in a rock n roll outfit.’ They say their inspiration comes from the mundane everyday life that reflects the city that conceived them.

This band will give you major 80’s and 90’s groovy vibes with their
lyrically and sonically rich music. They will satisfy the different needs
that you never knew you had. Some of their popular songs are Moon Child, Amber, Light Bulb, and I Hate Early Mornings [B Side]. 

Peter Cat Recording Co.  

Peter Cat Recording Co. was formed as an Indie band in Delhi, 2009.
The band has 5 members: Suryakant Sawhney on lead Vocals and Guitar; Dhruva Bhola on Bass/Samples; Rohit Gupta on Keys/Trumpet; Karan Singh, on Drums; and Kartik Sundareshan Pilani, is a multi-instrumentalist who can play Keyboard, Guitar, Electronics, and Trumpet.

They don’t have a specific genre and their music is advancing every time: from gypsy jazz to psychedelic cabaret; ballroom waltz to epic space disco; bass supernova to uneasy listening.

They are said to have created a separate genre of music that has now become highly typical of them. Their album Bismillah was released in June 2019. Their songs Floated By, Portrait of a Time, and We’re getting married are worth listening to.

When Chai Met Toast

This Kochi based band of four has won the hearts of many music lovers. If you’re a fan of bands like Mumford and Sons, and The Lumineers, then this band should definitely be on your playlist.

The band includes Ashwin Gopakumar, Achyuth Jaigopal, Palee Francis, and Pai Sailesh. The band’s first album, Joy of Little Things was released in 2017. Their content and heartwarming music will fill your heart with joy. The band has appealed to the audience across the length and span of the country.

They have over 80.5K subscribers on YouTube. They recently released a music video of their song Beautiful World (Distanced). 

Indian Ocean

Indian ocean is an indie rock band that was formed in New Delhi in 1990.They are recognized as the pioneers of the fusion rock genre in
India.

Their music can be classified as a blend of contemporary fusion
music with jazz-laced rhythms. The band comprised Susmit Sen,
Asheem Chakravorty, Rahul Ram, and Amit Kilam till Chakravorty in 1991.

Now the band comprises five members: Amit Kilam on Drums,
percussion/vocals; Rahul Ram on Bass guitar, and vocals; Himanshi Joshi, vocals; Tuheen Chakravorty, on Tabla/other percussions; and Nikhil Rao, on Guitar.

The Raghu Dixit Project

The Raghu Dixit Project is a multilingual folk music band based in Banglore. The band includes Raghu Dixit, on Vocals/Acoustic Guitar; Joe Jacob on Drums; Naresh Nathan on Bass Guitar/Backing Vocals; Naveen Thomas on Guitar; and Akshay Ganesh on Violin.

The band is praised as one of the best indie acts in the country. Having played across the country now features prominently and frequently on some of the biggest music festivals.

The band has played at several stages abroad and for the Queen of England. Their lively music has charmed many, regardless of whether the song is in Hindi or Kannada. Mysore Se and Jag Changa are two of the most-cherished
acts by the band.

Ankur Tewari and The Ghalat Family

Formed in Mumbai in 2009, ATGF is the Hindi rock project of singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari. The band is recognized as one of the most
innovative bands in the Hindi-rock space.

They create Urdu and Hindi acoustic ballads, folk-rock/rock-and-roll music. The band includes Ankur Tewari, on Vocals; Sidd Coutto, on Drums, Johan Pais on Bass; Gaurav Gupta, on Guitar/Keys/Vocals; and Vivaan Kapoor, on Drum/Percussion/Vocals. ATGF has performed in many festivals including Barcardi NH7 Weekender, Storm Festival, and the prestigious Kala Ghoda Festival.

Nalayak

Formed in Chandigarh in 2015, Nalayak is an indie rock band, recognized for its music which gently mocks the flaws of modern society and for their explosive live performances and pumping music.
